The Pros and Cons of Co-Teaching

Teaching students with special needs brings about a new set of challenges when it comes to classroom management. As a first year teacher, it is important to know and be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Some classrooms that include special education students are provided with a co-teacher. The job of the co-teacher is to help assist and collaborate with the teacher to provide the best education for the student. Co-teaching relationships are subject to a myriad of problems, but there are also a great deal of advantages.

1. Student to teacher ratio is cut in half which creates more one on one time with each student.

2. The more adults that are in the classroom, the easier it is to manage the class.

3. While one teacher is explaining a concept another can monitor progress and participation.

4. If a student is struggling with content, one of the teachers can pull them aside and assist. This eliminates management problems from the struggling student.
1. Lack of communication between the two teachers.

2. If the teachers do not communicate, students will play one teacher against the other.

3. Teachers must be prepared for the lessons.

4. Inconsistencies in instruction between the two teachers.

Though there are cons of having a co-teacher, there are MANY benefits! By doing the following, you will be providing your students with the best education possible while having a positive co-teaching experience.
  1. COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE!! Talk with your co-teachers about the lessons and the outcomes that are expected of each!
  2. COLLABORATE! When planning lessons, collaborate with your co-teacher. Ask them for input. They may have great activities or ideas that could help their students as well as others in the class.
  3. CONCENTRATE on the reason you are co-teaching! Remember that you are there for the students and their education should be your number one priority! The responsibility of your students falls on both of your shoulders. Always put the students needs first and consider what would be best for the learner.
